In July 1992, the Commonwealth, State and Territory heads of governments agreed to establish a national system for vocational education and training (VET). This system came into full effect in January 1994, with the establishment of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA). This is the first annual national report. It comprises two volumes: volume one provides an overview of the system and highlights the national achievements during 1994; and volume two contains chapters from each State and Territory and the Commonwealth that outline their achievements against the national priorities. It is critical that a workforce retraining strategy which meets the specific needs of the existing operative level workforce be developed which is integrated into the existing delivery of VET. Evidence suggests that increased skills for operative level workers can play an important role in improving firms' competitiveness. It also provides a more flexible, responsive workforce which is more capable of responding effectively to competitive opportunities. Show less

These guidelines outline the preferred contents of the Industry Vocational and Training (VET) Plans for 1996-1997. The Industry VET plans are developed by the Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs). The Plans form the basis of a national strategic plan for training within their industry. The ITABs develop the Plans in consultation with the industry, State and Territory ITABS, community groups and so on. Show less
