This discussion paper examines the role, function and membership of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples' Training Council. The Council aims to provide ANTA with timely and strategic advice about the training needs of Indigenous peoples throughout Australia. The main purpose of the paper is to gather views of stakeholders on the most effective arrangements for the future direction and mode of operation of the Council, including membership. While huge strides have been made in the vocational education and training (VET) sector in recent times, Indigenous people continue to face problems in relation to opportunity, access and equity within the training sector. It is equally important that such training takes account of factors such as cultural needs and geographic location. The paper includes two attachments: the first provides information relating to indigenous people about their general employment and population profile, educational attributes and participation in VET; and the second attachment outlines the key planning processes for the VET system. At the August 2001 meeting of the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) National Review of Group Training Steering Committee it was decided that a sub-committee be formed to coordinate a series of consultations in States and Territories. The purpose of these consultations was to provide an opportunity for key stakeholders to have direct input into the terms of reference of the National Review of Group Training and to obtain feedback from current and potential users of group training services. The sub-committee identified four sets of key stakeholders: (1) group training organisations; (2) employers who are currently not using group training services; (3) host employer clients of group training organisations or employers who are using group training services; and (4) apprentices/trainees of group training organisations. This publication offers preliminary data from this series of consultations. Show less

New and changing technologies impact on Australia?s workplaces and the people who work within them. Skills and knowledge are needed by these people to apply these technologies and the vocational education and training (VET) system has to keep pace and make sure that training products and services are up-to-date with current technology. The Shared Technology project, commissioned by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA), provides a summary of the technologies that are likely to have an impact on a range of industries in the next five years to 2008. These industries include the automotive, electronics, building and construction, information technology, engineering, telecommunications and electrical industries. Four themes to emerge from this project are: there is a move to systems that are open and based upon international standards; there is a need for managers and employees to learn about these new technologies in order to plan and anticipate their impact on the day-to-day processes in the workplace; training is available for these technologies, but the source of training is not necessarily seen as being associated with the incumbent industry; there is a tendency for managers to regard new entrants who have the necessary 'soft skills' as more valuable to the organisation even though it is the existing workers who have the expertise to be able to work across legacy systems and within the new technology.
