The conference will explore the important theme of Indigenous education. It will draw together research-based knowledge about the environmental conditions, pedagogical strategies and curriculum approaches that create pathways to success for Indigenous students. The conference will explore our understanding of the role of language and story telling in supporting access to the curriculum and it will consider directions from research studies in the key areas of early-years education, literacy and numeracy learning, attendance and retention of students and successful post school transitions.

An important conclusion from the OECD's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is that some countries are succeeding not only in raising overall levels of national performance, but also in improving levels of equity over time. As Australia grapples with the question of how to achieve improvements in both quality and equity in education, Research Conference 2014 brings together leading researchers and practitioners to share their evidence and experience in relation to this important challenge. The papers from Research Conference 2014 report on Australian and international research into such topics as learning in the early years, the wide spread in achievement between [the] highest and lowest performing students at any year level, and re-emerging gender issues in mathematics. Research Conference 2019 was held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, Victoria from 4-5 August, 2019, with the theme of 'preparing students for life in the 21st century: identifying, developing and assessing what matters'.

In a rapidly changing world, there is widespread agreement that students require new levels of skill in collaborating, communicating, thinking critically, innovating, solving problems and applying what is learnt in new contexts, underpinned by values and dispositions that include a commitment to social inclusion, responsible citizenship and respect for human rights. So how do we best prepare young people and equip them to survive and thrive in the unpredictable world of the future? Research Conference 2019 will profile research around innovative ways of conceptualising, developing and assessing this broader range of priorities for student learning and development in the 21st century. It will bring together teachers, policymakers, researchers and academics to share a wide range of perspectives about how to approach this ongoing and multi-faceted challenge.

The workshop brought together representatives from university associations, universities and governments to support, pursue and work towards the achievement of the priorities outlined by [Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation] APEC Economic Leaders. The workshop focused on four key themes within cross-border education cooperation - student mobility, researcher mobility, provider mobility and virtual mobility. For each theme, presenters used their expertise in the subject matter to raise key challenges, highlight examples of good practice and consider opportunities for university associations to work together. A panel discussion on each theme enabled a broad range of experiences and perspectives to be shared. For each theme workshop delegates focused on the identification of barriers to cross-border education cooperation, good practice in cross-border education cooperation and opportunities for collaboration in cross-border education cooperation.
