This Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) briefing draws on research which investigates the long term outcomes of four groups of young people (those born in 1961, 1965, 1970 and 1975) as well as another sample of young people aged 19 years in 1994 and 1995 to look at labour market experiences, including employment and earning patterns, of Australia's young people. The briefing highlights that: (i) school achievement in literacy and numeracy improves employment and earnings; (ii) the gender gap in earnings is declining; (iii) apprenticeships bring initial advantages which decline over time; (iv) increases in the national unemployment rate relate to decreases in hourly earnings; (v) having a degree is one of the main positive influences on earnings; and (vi) year 12 completion decreases the chances of unemployment. This publication highlights research undertaken by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), investigating topics of importance and relevance to education and training and the significant role they play in shaping education policy. Two articles are of particular interest. 'Surveying youth study and employment' looks at a recent study under the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program, investigating students who were in Year 9 in 1995, but who left school before Year 11. The study looked at how school achievement, gender, ethnicity, school type and parents' social status influenced early school leaving. Employment outcomes were also analysed. The other study of interest is 'The economics of vocational education and training', which has been researched by the Centre for the Economics of Education and Training (CEET). The study focused on research concerning the TAFE workforce in Victoria and focused on the age, qualifications, gender and specialisations of current TAFE teachers. It aimed to provide the Office of Training and Further Education (OTFE) with ideas to improve staff development activities at statewide and TAFE institute levels. The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program studies the progress of several groups of young Australians as they move from school into post-secondary education and work. This technical paper describes the weighting procedure developed for analysing the first five (1995-1999) waves of the 1995 year nine cohort (Y95) of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) study. The Y95 cohort of LSAY was drawn from the national sample of approximately 13,000 year nine students. It was constructed by randomly selecting two year nine classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Show less
