This investigation compiles the evidence currently in existence to build a case for implementation of an Australian e-portfolio or e-portfolios. E-portfolio applications have been around for a number of years and are widely adopted in Australian education institutions. However, once learners are no longer involved in formal education, their access to e-portfolio services can be severely limited, even though they are by no means at the end of their education and are just beginning the work phase of their career. Several e-portfolio implementations around the world demonstrate the potential of e-portfolios for users post-education, including: supporting workers facing redundancy; career development; workforce development and planning; continuing professional development; lifelong learning; and articulation of skills and experience. E-portfolios have the potential to contribute to the policy response to an economic environment that includes complexities such as skills shortages, ongoing adjustment of the Australian labour market, the life-long learning agenda, and the impact of the global financial crisis. Worldwide, e-portfolios are at an interesting stage. Many implementations are considered highly successful by their stakeholders, in terms of benefits for individual users and labour market outcomes. However, the implementations are too recent for a solid base of evidence to have emerged, which means that several successful e-portfolios have been developed and implemented simply on the basis of an understanding that this is the way of the future. The Year 12 Student Choices survey was designed to obtain up-to-date information on the relative importance of factors influencing Year 12 students' decision making - both those who intend to go to university and those who do not. The report is based on survey data collected from 3,212 Year 12 students from across Australia. Some of the key findings include: the majority of Year 12 respondents expressed a preference for studying at university, either immediately upon completing their secondary studies (53 per cent) or following a gap year (19 per cent); the level of students' interest in university study varies among different disadvantaged groups - students from non-metropolitan regions and from low socioeconomic status backgrounds show lower levels of interest in university but greater levels of interest in TAFE or New Apprenticeships; while the focus of the study is on university, there are important findings on the reasons for choosing vocational education and training (VET), work or other pathways - students not intending to go to university were likely to perceive enrolling in vocational education or training or engaging in work as better options for their future careers; and this study confirms the findings of earlier research (e.g. James, Baldwin and McInnis, 1999), that, for those planning to go to university, choice of course rather than institution appears to play a more important role in forming student preferences.

This report details the findings of a survey of parents, community members and secondary school students on their attitudes to, and participation in activities related to, science, engineering and technology (SET). The survey was conducted in 2007. The aims of the survey were to assess changes in community awareness and attitudes to SET within Australia since 1997 when the last similar survey was conducted, the effectiveness of current Australian SET-awareness raising initiatives (such as science centres, awards, etc.), and the effect of these initiatives on influencing decisions on entering SET careers.

The 2008 Graduate Pathways Survey was designed to gain information on employment outcomes five years after completing a bachelor degree, how these changed from graduates' initial outcomes, the pathways taken and the factors that influence outcomes. 9,238 graduates from all Table A higher education providers (with one exception) as well as Bond University and the University of Notre Dame participated in the survey. The 2008 Graduate Pathways Survey was the first national study of its kind in Australia. The key findings were that: (1) graduates can take a few years to establish their careers: the rate of participation in paid work among graduates rose from 84% to 91% between the first and fifth year following graduation; (2) at the national level, the median graduate salary rose from $38,000 to $60,000 in the first five years post-graduation - a 58% increase; (3) graduate outcomes and pathways varied for different fields of education, with some graduates taking longer to settle into their careers; and (4) graduates from disadvantaged backgrounds achieved outcomes on par with the general graduate population.

This resource, consisting of work books and a CD-ROM, describes the skills and knowledge required by Indigenous participants to prepare for employment. It focuses on developing knowledge of Australian workplaces, their work practices and requirements and potential employment opportunities to assist participants in making decisions about possible career paths. Each workbook covers an element from the competency which is broken down into sections for each performance criteria. The workbooks are: Identify workplace expectations; Research a selected industry; Describe workplace functions and layout of a range of workplaces; Research an employment opportunity; and Prepare a current portfolio to showcase skills. The CD-ROM contains supporting audio sessions. The resource is funded under the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) program by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Show less

The Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable provides a forum for Australian Apprentices, as key users of the national training system, to inform governments about issues affecting their training and careers. The Roundtable comprises 28 members selected from a diverse range of Australian Apprentices. Through the activities and process of Roundtable meetings, specific VET issues were identified and working groups were established to investigate, research and report on their findings. Six working groups were established: (1) Commencement and Retention, (2) Information and Communication, (3) Future Focus, (4) Training and Learning, (5) Workplace and Industrial Relations, and (6) Youth at Risk. This research included the development of surveys distributed to school leavers, job seekers, current Australian Apprentices, career advisors, employers and registered training organisations. The Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable 2008 report is a synopsis of the issues identified by the six working groups and includes suggested approaches to addressing these emergent issues.
