The learning in this workbook is intended for people working in or wanting to work in the community services industry. Workers in the mental health sector provide information and support to people with mental health problems. Chapter one focuses on an understanding of the history of mental health work, and the changing nature of mental health work. Chapter two develops knowledge of mental health issues. Chapter three deals with the necessity of being committed to the important values and attitudes of the mental health sector. Chapter four discusses the notion of working well with people from different backgrounds. There is a final assessment at the end of the workbook.

This report is part of the series of investigations commissioned by the Australian Government’s Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) as part of the Strategic ICT Advisory Service (SICTAS) project. The report looks at the current experience of student teachers in applying [information and communications technology] ICT in pedagogy, the barriers to using technology during teacher training, challenges in the practicum and ways to improve their experience of using ICT in their pre-service. In addition the report attempts to analyse recent national and international research, including the Demand and Value Assessment Method (DVAM) research recently undertaken for edna, Partnerships in Information Communication Technology Learning (PICTL), and research from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). Key questions addressed in the investigation included the following: (1) to what extent do teacher education courses develop pre-service teachers’ ICT skills and confidence, particularly in relation to using ICT technologies in their own teaching practice?; (2) are pre-service teachers required to apply ICT skills during their practicum? In this respect, are there any barriers? How might we improve student teachers’ experience in using ICT in the classroom?; (3) are there any particular barriers to student teachers accessing ICT facilities either in their coursework at university or during their practicum at school? To what extent do pre-service teachers have access to appropriate facilities at home?; and (4) are there any requirements in respect of ICT skills and experience for teacher registration? If not, what is the case for such requirements?

The increasing demand for pilots is likely to have a severe impact on the industry in the near future, with possible implications for economic growth and coverage of services in regional Australia. Following industry representations and discussions with other government agencies, the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government (Department of Infrastructure) undertook to investigate the reported shortage of pilots that has been affecting the aviation industry. As a result, DEEWR conducted a phone survey of employers of pilots of fixed-wing aircraft (pilots) in November 2007. This report contains the results of that survey along with other information relating to the supply of, and future demand for, pilots within Australia. Show less

The National Quality Council (NQC), through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), engaged KPMG to develop a set of quality indicators and a resultant reporting mechanism for state and territory Registering and Course Accrediting Bodies (RCABs). These quality indicators and reporting mechanism are to be used to gain an indication of RCAB performance against the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) 2007 Standards for Registering Bodies and AQTF Standards for Course Accrediting Bodies (collectively referred to as the AQTF Standards), respectively. Phase one involved the development of eight quality indicators for Registering Bodies and a set of seven quality indicators for Course Accrediting Bodies. This report of phase one provides an introduction and project requirements, project activities undertaken, quality indicators, options for the reporting mechanism, and conclusion and next steps.

In the past decade, Canadian immigration policy experienced a shift towards the expansion of the temporary foreign worker (TFW) program because of a perceived necessity to prevent economic slow down in times of labour shortages. Conditions about hiring TFWs were imposed on employers to avoid abuses that developed in the past with such programs. However, it appears that a majority of construction workers in Metro Vancouver do not trust these conditions work. Skilled workers believe TFWs lower their wage and unskilled workers believe, in addition, that they make it harder to get a job. Also a majority of workers do not believe the program is necessary to fill vacancies. Hence, there appears to be a deep mistrust in the functioning of the program. Active monitoring of the conditions imposed on employers who hire TFWs would greatly improve the perception resident workers have about the program and its acceptability.

This report outlines findings collected from listening to and analysing the views and expectations of students within Australian education and training institutions about learning with technologies. The overarching question for this research was: 'what are the views of students and early career educators, about learning with technologies in Australian education and training?' In 2008, students in primary and secondary schools, vocational education and training (VET) institutions, international students studying education in universities and pre-service teacher education students contributed to the research based upon their current experiences and views. Early career teachers were asked to reflect on their experiences as pre-service teachers. Data was collected through online surveys and focus groups. The research design was informed by a literature review. The purposes of this research were: (a) to gain an improved and contemporary understanding of the expectations and experiences of learners and early career educators, of how information and communication technologies (ICT) may be utilized to improve learning outcomes; and (b) to develop a better understanding of students' and educators' requirements regarding ICT in education and training. The research found that students believe technology is a vital learning aid as it can provide access to detailed information, opportunities to practice for tests, help with maths and development of problem solving skills. The research also found ICT offers more opportunities to tailor education to meet students’ needs and increase their motivation to learn.

This publication provides a sample of eleven of the thirty Reframing the Future strategic and change management projects undertaken in 2007. The eleven projects were chosen on a basis that each of them focused on building capability strategically. The projects chosen as exemplars for further exploration in this publication were selected for their combination of looking inwards and looking outwards to identify changes required to support contemporary [vocational education and training] VET, as well as the VET we may see in the future. At the conclusion of the publication we draw a set of conclusions from these projects on the ways in which they have contributed to the aims, and how they can act as beacons to other [registered training organisations] RTOs and individuals intending to travel the same pathways.
