As a major contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, InWEnt - Capacity Building International, in partnership with the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training hosted an international experts' meeting in Bonn, Germany on 6-7 November 2007. The purpose of the meeting, titled 'Corporate social responsibility and education for sustainable development: advancing the partnership' was to consider examples and strategies for building global capacity for integrating education, training and capacity building Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs in private and public organisations. It also considered how [technical and vocational education and training] TVET systems and institutions can ensure their students enter the workforce with knowledge, skills and aptitudes suitable for working in organisations with a strong CSR orientation. As such, the meeting was a follow-up to an international consultation on 'Education for sustainable development: engaging the corporate sector', also held in Bonn, 23-25 May 2007, and convened by UNESCO-UNEVOC and UNESCO Headquarters Paris, in close partnership with InWEnt and other partners.

[This] document outlines the strategic plan of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for the period from 2018 to 2020. The strategy supports the overarching vision of UNESCO for TVET contained in the UNESCO Strategy for TVET (2016-2021). It sets out the strategic direction that assists UNESCO-UNEVOC to meet UNESCO's targets for TVET development in the Member States. The document is aligned with UNESCO's Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) 2014-2021 and UNESCO's Programme 39/C5 that articulates how UNESCO will deliver on its mandate in the final period of implementation of UNESCO's MTS. The strategy takes into account recent developments including the adoption of global frameworks and calls to action to fulfil the Education 2030 Framework for Action and to ensure a better response from education and training to combating climate change and ensuring adaptation to its impacts.

This is a comprehensive report on a subregional seminar for Eastern and Southern African countries titled National policy definition in technical and vocational education: beyond the formal sector. An important sphere of education and training is that which is needed by individuals who are self-employed or employed in small-scale business. This is often referred to as the non-formal sector. The majority of people around the world work in this sector. Yet the provision that has been made to assist them in their endeavours has been very little and, in many cases, just non-existent. Therefore UNESCO, through its UNEVOC project, has made a commitment to reach out to these people that are beyond the formal sector of education and employment and seeks to encourage appropriate authorities, including governments, formal enterprises and non-government organisations, to assist the development of an effective non-formal sector within national economies. The seminar, of which this is a report, addressed the multifarious issues associated with this endeavour. It has both identified the many problems and suggested some solutions. It is to be hoped that the report will alert the appropriate authorities around the world to the urgent need to make tangible commitments to develop and strengthen the non-formal sector including small-business enterprise.
