This paper discusses a pilot project aimed at the capacity building of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges to introduce workplace based experience (WBE) as part of the college programmes in keeping with the need to improve the relevance of programmes to industries and workplaces. Through the implementation of the pilot, a number of positive outcomes emerged. It is clear that WBE can contribute towards improved retention and throughput of students as they become more motivated to learn once they have been exposed to authentic workplaces. For college management, the most important positive outcome was the building of relationships with local businesses, while for the employers, the benefit is in getting to know what the college programmes entail, and in pre-screening possible new employees. The paper ends with a list of critical factors for the successful implementation of WBE in the college sector.
