This report, completed in 1993, is the contribution of Portugal to the nine-country study set up to examine the impact of work organisation on the skilling process and to highlight links and opportunities for formal and informal apprenticeships - initial training and continuing training. Part 1 of this report is a national study on the problems facing Portugal, the social environment and the links between formal and informal training. Part 2 describes three case studies - the first company, owned by a French multinational but originally two rival electrical companies; the second, a family company founded in 1921, makers of agricultural implements; and the third, one of the major Portuguese banks. The authors summarise the particular problems faced by Portugal - particularly ones of exclusion from many aspects of 'modernisation' and the difficult decision as to which type of modernisation they should follow. They suggest a number of policy initiatives and measures which could contribute to fundamental changes in work organisation.
