More than 20,000 people are employed by accommodation enterprises on a full-time equivalent (FTE) in New Zealand. In this sector, the uptake of new information and communications technology (ICT) is evident in areas such as bookings, property management and back-office functions. The aim of this report is to provide greater understanding of how the uptake of ICT is influencing the demand for, and use of, labour in this sector and how enterprise owners and managers feel about the training issues arising from this. It is presented in eight main sections: the introduction outlines the aims and objectives of the research; section two reviews the key themes that emerged from national and international research into the topic; section three contains a brief overview of the New Zealand accommodation industry; section four outlines the research methodology; section five presents the research findings; section six synthesises the main findings; and sections seven and eight contain the references and appendices. The findings indicate: a growing pressure on the labour market with demand for skilled and experienced workers outstripping supply; the primary impact of ICT on labour use is in skills acquisition requirements, multi-tasking needs and enhancements in service provision; owners and family members in small operations who often handle ICT-related duties feel they require increased ICT training and knowledge in order to keep pace with the changing technology; and a mismatch currently exists between the labour needs in this sector and the new workers coming out of training providers.
