Responses to large influxes of language minority students from all over the world determines the quality of education the new populations receive. In the densely populated counties of northern New Jersey, in the New York City metropolitan area, the number of non-native speakers of English enrolling in community colleges has risen quickly. Initially, there seemed to be a homogeneity despite the ethnic diversity. International students came to the US to study and returned to their country when they completed their studies. As the years went by, college-age and adult immigrants began to out-number the F-1 visa students. As the adolescent children of the adult immigrants finished high school in their new country and began to enter the college, another new dimension was added. The Language Minority Crossover Student Project at Bergen Community College was one response to the members of ‘Generation 1.5’.
