This publications presents the destinations of UK-domiciled first degree and Foundation degree graduates from the 2009/10 academic year. It gives a profile of how many leavers entered employment, the type of work they were doing, how many went on to further study, and the numbers unemployed six months after graduation. To complement the data, there is an editorial for each subject area, written by specialist careers advisers, which discusses the data and presents case studies describing the career journeys that graduates have been on since they left university. The publication aims to help those who are considering entering higher education, as well as teachers and advisers with responsibility for careers guidance, and parents.

Part-time participation in higher education (HE) by people already in employment potentially represents an important means of skills updating and improvement for the UK economy. In particular, combining prior work experience and part-time HE study could help to increase the supply of highly-educated people with the types of 'employability skills' that are widely sought by employers. A further attraction of this mode of skills development is that it minimises absence from work, with individuals investing their own time in study. In this context there is considerable interest in learning more about the extent to which UK employers provide support with course fees and other costs of part-time HE study - a form of support which is widespread in the United States. In this report we draw on recent surveys of part-time students and their employers in the UK in order to investigate the extent and nature of employer support for part-time HE study and the perceived advantages and disadvantages of this kind of study for the organisations concerned.

The evidence suggests that working class students are disadvantaged in the graduate labour market because they lack the economic, social and cultural capital possessed by their middle class peers. This research investigated how this influences the way they approach career decision-making and whether it contributes to their disadvantage in the graduate labour market. The study examined how working class undergraduates in their final year of study at Edge Hill University make decisions about their careers. In particular, the study focused on the rationale behind the approach they adopted. This research involved two stages. First, students from a range of different types of degree were asked to complete a questionnaire. This provided information about the student's characteristics in terms of age, gender, degree studied and their social class. It also asked about the extent to which students used the careers service at Edge Hill. The second stage of the research involved 30 in-depth interviews with working class students about how they made career decisions. These interviews were taped and later transcribed. The results of the study were analysed under three main headings: financial issues, networks and values.
