This joint report from e-skills UK and BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT asks why are there so few women in [information technology] IT in the UK. It notes that females consistently achieve higher grades than males in IT-related subjects, but they fill just 16 per cent of IT and Telecoms professional occupations. Other key findings in relation to gender inequality in IT include: of the 753,000 people working in the IT sector at the time of this report, just one in five (20 per cent) were women; in 2013, within the IT sector itself little more than one in 10 (11 per cent) IT specialists were women; the proportion of women working as self-employed IT specialists has more than doubled over the past decade; just under one in five (18 per cent) of females working as IT specialists were employed on a part-time basis - a figure well below that for other occupations; women are much more likely to hold technician/engineer grade positions than men (34 per cent versus 20 per cent respectively) and less likely to be working in 'professional' (primarily development related) occupations (46 per cent versus 57 per cent); female representation within IT specialist roles is higher within the devolved nations than in the UK as a whole (19 per cent versus 16 per cent); at £640 per week, the median gross weekly rate of pay for female IT specialists was 16 per cent (£120) less than the comparison figure for men working in IT roles (£760) and the recorded level of pay for women IT roles has been consistently below that of male IT specialists in each of the past 10 years; gender imbalance in both the IT industry and in IT occupations is an issue to all [European Union] EU 15 nations; and female representation is in these industries/occupations is lower in the UK than the EU 15 average.

This report has been produced by e-skills UK [the sector skills council for business and information technology (IT)] on behalf of SAS UK & Ireland [an independent vendor of business analytics software and services]. It is the second in a series looking at the current/forecast uptake of big data analytics and the associated demand/supply for related labour and skills amongst UK employers. The first report provided a detailed analysis of advertised demand for big data specialists over the past five years using bespoke data from IT Jobs Watch. Using this analysis, in conjunction with econometric forecasts provided by Experian, the report set out three possible scenarios for related demand trends over the coming five years.

This current report builds knowledge in this area through baseline estimates for big data adoption and employment based upon the findings of two bespoke surveys conducted amongst (a) SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) and (b) larger firms (those with 100 or more staff) operating within the UK.
