The aims of this project were to work with supervisors and trainers within the furnishing industry in order to: raise their awareness of the language, literacy and numeracy needs of employees; develop their skills to identify and deal with language, literacy and cross-cultural needs; and to provide an induction package for trainers and assessors to use when working with employees. Specifically, the project was to support the implementation of structured on the job training in seven sectors of the furnishing industry. This resource firstly discusses key definitions, the importance of language and literacy skills, and case studies of employees with low levels of language and literacy skills. The training package section covers communication skills development, skills assessment and effective teamwork. The resource could readily be adapted for use in other industries. Show less
