As a result of award restructuring within the metals industry a new course is required to enable the adoption of the National Engineering modules in the fabrication strand. The course is designed to provide the apprentice with instruction and specific training in the light, heavy fabrication and welding industry, including domestic, commercial and industrial areas, to augment and supplement on-the-job training. This course is designed to provide training for people who intend to work as welders in light or heavy metal fabrication occupations. It meets the National Metal and Engineering competency standards for a person working at the C10/General Service Officer 5 level (ASF 3) in Specialisation Band A in Fabrication.

To be eligible for the awards of Statement of Attainment in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding or Gas Metal Arc Welding students must successfully complete all three modules in the relevant stream of study.
