The results suggest that overall the framework has broad utility based on the information sources used herein to verify and refine its content. This issue of ‘Centerfocus’ argues that arts education, encompassing dance, music, theatre, and the visual arts, should be included in the vocational curriculum in secondary school. The authors suggest that study of the arts in addition to skills training is a valuable strategy for educating young people for further study and work. The paper documents the relationship between vocational education and arts education over the course of the 20th century. The discussion then examines the relationship between the changing employee characteristics required of the emerging economy of the new century and the implications of these changes for better collaboration between vocational and arts education. In conclusion, the authors look at circumstances favouring cooperation between vocational and arts education teachers, and recommend strategies to facilitate this relationship. Show less

This review and synthesis of research in business and office education is based on doctoral dissertations and some independent studies completed between 1968 and 1980. Approximately 1200 studies are reviewed. It has been organised according to the major content areas comprising business and office education such as: accounting/bookkeeping; basic business/economics; business communications; business data processing; business math; shorthand; and typewriting and word processing. Research related to the philosophy and general objectives of business education, the educational environment of business programs, and the social and business environment affecting business education is reviewed in separate sections. Career education, and student professional organisations are also treated separately. All content areas are broken down into various sub-areas, such as objectives, curriculum, technology, teaching methods, and evaluation. Joint implications from five recent studies on occupational choice indicate that a more in-depth concentration on the occupational consistency or discontinuity of women and minorities will provide direction for future academic discipline and policy for this population. The discipline and policy process is potentially one of the most important areas in research because it begins to raise questions about concepts of occupation. The studies show the extent to which identities seem to organize occupational choice for all individuals. A set of occupations consistent with how these identities are put together seems to be emerging. There seems to be a sense of occupational persistence with upward mobility within the context of tribe, class, or gender. Arguably, two factors--tribal/cultural concept and social class--seem to contribute to the relationship between ethnicity and mathematical performance at each educational stage. Both affect family behavior patterns, which, in turn, powerfully affect children's school performance. Literature indicates that girls' occupational expectations depend on how they expect to allocate their time during adulthood between the labor force and work in the home. Career choices seem to reflect how and when to resolve the conflict between achievement in the labor force and family responsibilities.

This report summarises a number of opportunities for two-year colleges to foster community development in the context of business incubation and entrepreneurship education and training programmes. These are summarised from a practical standpoint to assist and inform administrators, instructors and students with an interest in entrepreneurship and community development. Sections cover: establish a business incubator, providing education and training opportunities in business incubation, supporting the business community, two-year college-based education and training in entrepreneurship, and facilitating school-to-work-to-business ownership transition.
This is the third in a series of three reports. The research base is derived from a national survey of entrepreneurs and managers in business incubators operating under different sponsorship arrangements, including support from two-year colleges (see report 1, TD/INT 57.250), and from case studies featuring business incubators operating under contrasting settings and organisation schemes (see report 2, TD/INT 57.249).
