Vocational student organizations (VSOs) are an integrated part of the overall curricula in most educational institutions, providing many educational and work experiences in the classroom, as well as benefits to faculties, school administrators, and communities. They are an important bridge between the real world and the world inside the classroom. By participating in VSOs, educators can observe what technological training is missing in their vocational programs and consequently can take steps to ensure that their local VSOs either remain or become part of a more futurist-oriented educational society by serving as a vehicle for student exposure to and experiences with recent advances in high technology. This study examines the mathematics and vocational-technical reform movements. Both movements aim at providing all students with a challenging curriculum and the learning required for today’s world. The questions are: what are the characteristics of promising programmes engaged in bridging these two reform movements? and what can we learn from these programmes to inform the development of rigorous integration efforts? This study addresses these questions by building an understanding of integrated programme development and approaches to linking the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and mathematics/career curricula. Four promising programmes are identified and case studies are run to establish the development and extent to which the NCTM standards guided local efforts. Findings indicate that linking NCTM standards to emerging career-orientated curriculum is not a simple process requiring pedagogical changes only. It is a challenge that will involve comprehensive restructuring of the curriculum, instruction and assessment. Organisational and management changes are also necessary. Show less

This publication consists of two research updates. The first, ‘Learning to work: how parents nurture the transition from school to work’, highlights conclusions from the study, ‘Lessons from life’s first teacher: the role of the family in adolescent and adult readiness for school-to-work transition’ [indexed at TD/INT 58.407], which offers an analysis of how families contribute to work-related learning. Its intended audience is parents. It describes two views of family involvement, discusses family pressures, and lists behaviors of proactive families that make significant contributions to the welfare of their members and the strength of the national work force. It also lists strategies that proactive families use to support learning and examples of work values found among proactive families. Sources of assistance for parents to use to enhance the family’s capacity to nurture work-related development are cited. Seven resources for further information are listed. The second update, ‘Family matters … in school-to-work transition’, is intended for educational leaders and policymakers. It discusses the importance of families in the school-to-work transition and assumptions that have limited the recognition of the family’s role. Drawing on the same study as the first update, this report addresses three topics: proactive, inactive, and authoritarian families; family work values that improve school-to-work readiness; and ways families influence work readiness. Policy recommendations are made.

However, for tech prep to be successful, a philosophical mind-set change must take place among all educators along with the adoption of a new mission for education. This study, which ran from 1994 to 1996, evaluates nontraditional forms of assessment for vocational education. Six case studies were chosen and the assessment systems were critically reviewed. From this comparison a number of important design and implementation considerations that should inform decisions about the uses of alternative assessments were identified.

The results indicate that even when relatively untrained teachers use the cognitive apprenticeship approach, students can be expected to perform as well as students who are taught through a more traditional approach. However the generalisability of the findings from this experimental study are limited due to the small sample size and the single data colllection site. Show less

Analyses of occupational forecasts have played a prominent role in this debate about the skill and educational implications of changes in technology and other developments in the economy. Unfortunately, some analysts and commentators have used the data to argue that skill and educational demands are rising while others rely on occupational data to support the argument that skills are unchanged or falling. Although the latest occupational data suggest that a dramatic educational upgrading of the occupational structure is not taking place, they do indicate that at the very least there is a steady increase in those occupations that currently employ more highly educated workers. Moreover, there is a case to be made that the projections underestimate the extent of upgrading. In the end, there are severe limitations to the usefulness of occupational forecasting for guiding educational reform. Many of the most significant changes may be taking place within occupational categories, yet occupational forecasts can tell us little about these changes. Moreover, while the occupational data may tell us something about needed changes in the amount of schooling, the most important issues for educational reform probably concern the content, not the amount, of education.
