In this paper the author addresses the discrepancy between the high level of interest in the topic of leadership, and an equivalent level of good research or understanding about it. The paper begins with a retrospective look at the issues raised by the 1992 Commonwealth Government task force that examined leadership and management development, culminating in the Karpin Report, and then covers three different issues: the current topics under discussion in management development and their influence on the development of leadership skills; leadership theories and contemporary ideas about what makes a good leader; and leadership development issues for the future. This article outlines the concept and process of self-managed learning (SML) as a way of addressing individual and organisational learning needs. SML is defined as a process in which individuals decide the content and method of their own learning in conjunction with others, within their current situational context and framework. Some brief examples of SML in practice in the UK are mentioned, and it is concluded that SML provides a means of ensuring that generic competencies essential to individual and organisational learning, are identified, assessed and developed. The article outlines the development stages in the UK, the composition of the departments and agencies involved, the targets and the findings of a survey to assess results. The program in Australia is an accreditation scheme to recognise companies that operate human resource development schemes at a benchmark level of performance. This brief article discusses the role of mentoring in developing people within the workplace. Now, with increased focus on eliminating barriers and enhancing opportunities for women and minorities, corporations are attempting to design formalised mentoring programs that provide opportunities for development. These programs are focused on providing opportunities particularly for those who have traditionally been excluded from the formal mentoring process. It briefly comments on the U.S. Department of Labor's Report on the Glass Ceiling Initiative, which identified women's lack of access to mentoring as one of the barriers that contribute to the glass ceiling. It then examines mentoring systems, outlines competencies for mentors and provides a guide to establishing an effective mentoring program. Show less
