The global higher education landscape has dramatically changed in the past few months due to the spread of the coronavirus (otherwise known as [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19). To inform and support the higher education sector, QS established ongoing surveys to take the pulse of prospective international students and higher education institutions throughout this crisis. Our prospective international student survey has attracted approximately 11,000 respondents since it was established in mid-February. In this white paper, we'll explore the findings of this survey and showcase how these responses have shifted over time as the coronavirus continues. An accompanying survey that targeted higher education professionals in universities across the globe has attracted more than 400 respondents. We'll explore these findings, including the impact on student recruitment, online learning offerings, campus management, and a range of other areas.

As the coronavirus [Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)] continues, it is becoming increasingly clear that this is a challenge that will be a fixture in our lives for some time to come. The global higher education sector is adapting to this new normal while implementing rapid changes to meet changing government regulations and recommendations. In this complex climate, flexibility and innovation will be the pivotal pillars for many universities. To aid in this endeavor, QS is conducting ongoing research into the impact of the coronavirus crisis on the higher education sector. Our ongoing surveys take the pulse of prospective international students and university professionals, detailing how they have responded to the health crisis and what measures they have implemented. In this report, we will share the results of these surveys to date, how responses have changed over time, and what this means for the higher education sector.

The [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 crisis has significantly impacted existing and prospective international students across the globe, influencing how they study, where they can travel to, and how often they can travel between their university and home. To explore these impacts and how students have adapted, QS runs an ongoing coronavirus survey of current and prospective international students. This report explores the survey responses from current international students and prospective international students, from the period of 4 September to 19 October. For this survey intake, 781 current students from 125 countries responded to the survey, while 6,958 prospective students from 173 countries also responded. This October report covers the latest findings from this survey, including: (1) Where current students are studying right now and what that looks like; (2) What measures current students are being asked to take to limit the spread of the coronavirus; (3) How effectively universities are handling the crisis, from the perspectives of both current students and prospective students; and (4) How prospective international students are adapting their application journey.

Higher education (HE) in the US is at a significant turning point. Advancements in teaching delivery and tech-enabled global connectivity did not happen overnight, but they were ushered in at a rapid clip as mission-critical for HE institutions during the global [COVID-19] pandemic. As institutions evolved over the past 12 months, so too did students' expectations around international study and higher education in general. The global health crisis has affected nearly every step of the student's decision-making journey. Whether they are just beginning online research, narrowing down their shortlist or ready to apply, many students have put plans on hold or become more open to distance learning.

Having run for nine years now, the International Student Survey (ISS) has grown to become the world's largest survey of pre-enrolled international students. By partnering with 115 institutions worldwide, the 2021 iteration was our largest ever, featuring the responses of 105,083 prospective students from 191 countries and territories around the world. In the US, the ISS enters its third year with new student insights on national perception, especially as it relates to the global health crisis. By combining the results from this survey with those of our ongoing Coronavirus Student Survey, this report seeks to provide a comprehensive outlook of how the coronavirus and the ensuing vaccination efforts around the world have shaped and influenced the decisions of prospective students with regards to their studies.

This report has been compiled to provide higher education institutions with the insights they need to improve their graduate employability and set their graduates up for success. With a tightening job market and complex challenges posed by the coronavirus [COVID-19] crisis, it is imperative to have an open conversation on the direction of education and the employment of future graduates. The report presents the findings from two surveys; the annual QS Global Employer Survey, which was conducted prior to the pandemic, and the Employer Pulse Survey, which was conducted in August. The first section of the report details the top recruitment priorities for global employers, the services and methods that employers believe are the most relevant for students when preparing for the workforce, and their perceived skills gaps. The second section compares the US, Mainland China, and the UK on these points and the final section puts a spotlight on graduate business school hiring.

Higher education must be at the heart of this change. To support governments and higher education to benchmark their readiness and set a skills-led transformation agenda, we have designed our inaugural QS World Future Skills Index. Drawing on QS and external datasets, the Index interprets higher education performance in the world of skills-led industrial change, helping to align with future demands in artificial intelligence (AI), digital, and green economies, foster innovation, talent development, and sustainable workforce competitiveness globally.
