Since the year 2000, INBAS (Institut fur berufliche Bildung, Arbeitsmarkt und Sozialpolitik = Institute for Vocational Education, Labour Market and Social Policy) has been conducting a project dedicated to Internet competence for disadvantaged youths (Internetkompetenz fur benachteiligte Jugendliche). The goal is to train professionals working in social programs for the disadvantaged to efficiently implement information and communication technologies (ICTs) both in their work with youth and in professionalising their own organisations. The author introduces basic texts on the topic of media competence, addresses current trends and considers the question of the extent to which educational institutions must change in order to adequately meet the challenges posed by the information society.
