This item comprises two volumes, bound in one. They are entitled: Volume 1: General report, and Volume 2: Case studies. The report is a further contribution to the TAFE National Staff Development Committee's extensive national program to examine staff training and development policies and practices. The primary aim of Return to Industry is to examine the current arrangements, and to propose options for improvement to these arrangements.

The report examines TAFE's Return to Industry initiative within the context of the National Training Agenda. In so doing, it recognises that TAFE needs to have an appropriately trained staff in order to respond effectively to the future direction of vocational education and training. In particular, the report identifies the importance of embracing Return to Industry as an integral feature of a planned approach to staff training and development. Show less

This project addresses the following questions: (1) what are the aims/objectives, content, structure and special features of university teacher education courses currently offered to TAFE teachers?; (2) what changes, if any, are planned for university teacher education courses currently offered to TAFE teachers?; (3) how do the courses currently offered address the needs and business of TAFE in the 1990s?; (4) how consistent across Australia are the courses provided by universities for TAFE teacher education?; (5) what national level initiatives are needed in 1992 and beyond to promote national consistency and to address the contemporary professional development needs of TAFE teachers?

In summary, the survey of providers of TAFE teacher education reveals that currently each state provides undergraduate courses at degree or diploma level. In some states associate diploma courses provide access to degree courses. Most states provide a graduate diploma in education for graduates in disciplines other than education or teaching. Across Australia undergraduate programs are being modified and developed to take account of the new demands being made on the TAFE sector while at the same time maintaining a commitment to the fundamental elements of education and teaching courses.
