Having a choice of transition pathways from school to work, further education or training gives young people the best chance of success. Using the 1995 cohort of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY), this study looks at the role post-school qualifications play in the year-by-year movement between labour market states by young people. Higher post-school qualifications are found to increase the chances of being permanently employed and provide protection against being persistently unemployed or out of the labour force. Show less

In almost all developed countries there has been substantial growth in university education over the last half-century. This growth has raised concerns that the benefits of university education are declining and that university education is not appropriate for students who, without the expansion, would not have been admitted. For such students, vocational education or direct entry to the labour market may be more appropriate. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of university and vocational qualifications, net of other influences on a variety of labour market outcomes for Australian youths up to age 25; and if the benefits of university degrees differ across the achievement continuum. Achievement is measured by test scores in the OECD's [Programme for International Student Assessment] PISA assessments. The six labour market outcomes investigated are: occupational status, hourly and weekly earnings, employment, unemployment and full-time work. The study finds that university degrees provide substantially superior labour market outcomes which are not confined to high and average achievers, at least for this cohort in their formative years in the labour market.

This study, which is based on annual data collected on education, training, and labour market activities up until 2004 from the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program, examines the factors that influence course completion by young people at university and documents the post-university activities, especially labour market activities, of those who enrol at a university but do not obtain a qualification. Key findings indicated that: students’ regional and socioeconomic background has little influence on their likelihood of completing university; and university non-completion has not had substantial negative effects on the transition to the labour market compared to other groups of young people with the exception of university course completers. LSAY briefing, produced by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), is a series which aims to provide summaries of findings from ACER research and to identify some of the implications for policy and further research. It is based on data from ACER's Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) project and key LSAY reports. This issue, which examines whether students' educational performance is influenced by where they live, highlights that: there are small differences between the literacy and numeracy performances of rural and urban students in the middle years of their education; there are only slight differences in their choice of subjects in Year 12 between rural and urban students, with rural students studying in the areas of health, home science and agriculture more frequently than their urban counterparts; the participation of young people living in regional and remote areas in Year 12 and higher education is lower than that of their urban counterparts; and the rates of participation in VET for rural people are at least as high as in urban areas. This report forms part of the research program Longitudinal surveys of Australian youth (LSAY), conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and financially supported by the Department of Employment, Education, Training and Youth Affairs (DEETYA).
There are three parts to this investigation of students’ attitudes to school life: firstly, possible changes over time; secondly, the influence of individual and school level variables on attitudes; and thirdly, the effect of these attitudes on achievement and leaving school. The four dimensions of attitudes to school isolated here are students’ general satisfaction with school, their attitudes to their teachers, their views on the opportunities their school provides, and their sense of achievement.

The increasing emphasise on and expansion of education and the importance of qualifications raises the issue of what happens to those who do not complete their secondary school education. This report, focusing on early school leaving in Australia forms part of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) research program. It focuses on students who leave school before the beginning of Year 11. The first part of the paper examines the social and demographic characteristics of early school leavers. The second part reports on the reasons for early school leaving and the third part of the study compares school leaving with social background, demographic, social and attitudinal factors. It also focuses on the effect of individual schools on early school leaving. The final section of the study examines the post-school activities of early school leavers focusing on their labour force participation.

The Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) program studies the progress of several groups of young Australians as they move from school into post-secondary education and work. This technical paper describes the weighting procedure developed for analysing the first five (1995-1999) waves of the 1995 year nine cohort (Y95) of the Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth (LSAY) study. The Y95 cohort of LSAY was drawn from the national sample of approximately 13,000 year nine students. It was constructed by randomly selecting two year nine classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Show less

This report investigates the effect of post-secondary education and training on the occupation and earnings of young people. In this report, the data analysed are from a sample of young people who were first interviewed when they were in Year 9 in 1995 and subsequently interviewed annually. This report analyses annual data collected up until 2005 when they were, on average, 24 years of age. Participation in education and training was considered separately from obtaining a qualification and comparisons were made with those young people who did not participate in post-school education and training at all. The types of post-school education and training analysed were apprenticeships, traineeships, technical and further education (TAFE) certificates, TAFE diplomas, university diplomas, university degrees, post-graduate degrees and other qualifications comprising mainly courses run by private providers. The report examined the occupational status of jobs and weekly earnings by type of post-school education and training. The multi-level regression analyses reported here provide estimates of the effects of participation in and qualifications from these types of post-secondary education and training on occupational status and earnings. It also examines the effects of other influences, such as prior labour market experiences of work and unemployment, literacy and numeracy, school type, socioeconomic background and ethnicity. In addition, the report examined the role of gender as it is well established that there can be marked differences in the educational and labour market experiences of young men and women. Show less
