The European Conference on Educational Research (ECER) is organised annually by the European Educational Research Association (EERA) to provide a European forum on discourse about the latest research findings on education in Europe and world-wide. This conference aims to foster mutual work and communication amongst researchers in Europe and encourage dialogue between researchers and those involved in decision-making in both policy and practice fields.

This paper reports on a study, which is part of a larger three-year follow-up research project ‘Health promotion teaching and learning in Finnish polytechnics’. The study is designed to explore the development of health promotional abilities and skills of nursing students. It investigates the structures and contents of health promotion in multi-disciplinary curricula of health care in Finnish polytechnics, and develops pedagogical methods used in them. The aim of this study is to produce data about the knowledge base and factors affecting student nurses’ decision-making in health promoting situations during their clinical training in hospital. The data are collected using stimulated recall interviews with student nurses reflecting on their videotaped health promoting interaction situations using Johns’s (1994) model of structured reflection. Reflective learning and students’ levels of reflection will be explored more specifically in the next phase of the project. Show less
