This paper explores and evaluates the use of the social enterprise concept to develop skills and widen participation in further and higher education, within a community setting. The paper is based upon a business model that combines a social enterprise with a training company and delivers vocational training within child and adult care settings, while helping new adult learners develop the skills needed to run their own business. This model has proved successful in terms of its impact on the individual, their clients and their community, and the business model used has received national interest.

This paper explores the factors that have led to this success, and draws lessons for others working in community learning and skills development. The methodological approach is qualitative, using personal narratives and focus group discussions with stakeholders. The paper draws out several themes that the authors believe have contributed to the success of the model.
