Co-operative education programmes, particularly when run parallel to conventional teaching programmes, have to compete for resources and justify outcomes in financial as well as educational terms. There can be a reluctance to recognise the validity of work based learning. Staff time committed to co-op placements is often viewed as an administrative rather than an academic function. Co-op programmes, when in competition with the demands of conventional teaching, can suffer a lack of the resources that are necessary to optimise the placement and industrial supervision of students.

Experience gained over the last sixteen years with the BSc(Tech) in Chemistry at the University of Waikato confirms that in addition to the usual benefits ascribed to co-op, financial advantage has accrued through its ability to both attract students and to cost-effectively provide for their chemical education. The purpose of this study was to canvas graduates from the BSc (Technology) degree programme of the last 10 years and collate their comments on the advantages and disadvantages of the BSc (Technology). This study continues the ongoing assessment but from the graduate perspective. Show less
