This research project developed out of the level of chatter and background mumbling in a year one Nursing class. Constant noise impeded the learning which might have taken place if the environment were a little more favourable. The purpose was to find a non-authoritarian way to limit chatter before it gets to the point of being intolerable.

Action research involves a systematic process with repeating cycles of planning, action, monitoring and reflecting. A narrative account is provided from the general plan, through to action involving the students and onto reflection on the data collected. Alternative teaching methods were trialled. These methods and the level of chattering were the subject of a questionnaire as well as discussion. Preferred methods were identified and methods that the students felt assisted most in lessening the classroom chatter were identified. Suggestions for future classes are given. Show less
