In this volume, the authors examine the coming era in education: the era of global perspectives. It is propsed that if integration of the planet into a single world system continues, then a completely new way of looking at schooling will be needed. 'The knowledge, skills, and attitudes appropriate to the global era, one when the key phenomena and structures impacting on the lives of human beings are of planetary scope, are dramatically different from those developed in an era of quasi-independent nation-states' (p. 5).
