This paper provides a summary of recent and current research and development (R&D) on agricultural extension, learning and change. The term ‘extension’ is used to describe a range of activities that are undertaken in order to facilitate positive change on farms and in agriculture. These include advisory, consulting, technology transfer, training, and self-development activities. The paper examines research undertaken in four areas: institutional change and organisational structures supporting learning and change; the professional development of farm advisors including their structural arrangement (such as length of contract and opportunities for professional development) and careers; the facilitation of enhanced learning/change processes on farms; and better understanding of the barriers to participation in learning opportunities. The main findings of the research are summarised under these four key areas. Show less
