The digital content sector requires highly skilled human capital. However, the Australian digital content industries often face skills and labour shortages, exacerbated by insufficient supply of high quality industry-ready graduates together with 'informational difficulties in predicting demand for skills, and weak linkages between skills providers and some creative industries'. The Australian Research Council, three state governments, industry, and a large vocational education and training (VET) provider funded the 60Sox project to investigate the employability of 507 aspiring creatives. The project involved surveying aspiring creatives who work or intend to work in the publicly-supported, less commercial end of the creative industries spectrum as well as those who work or intend to work in the digital content industries. The project team set itself three objectives to analyse survey data that align with the overall purpose of the 60Sox project: (1) to identify the characteristics, skills and attributes of aspiring creatives who completed the survey; (2) to determine the extent to which aspiring creatives ([creative industries] CI graduates) have made successful education-to-work transitions, and identify any factors that influence the ability of aspiring creatives to make successful transitions; and (3) to determine the extent to which aspiring creatives engage in communities of practice in the creative industries, and identify ways to encourage their engagement with these communities and industry. This report is the first of two reports that aim to understand and enhance the employability of aspiring creatives. It consists of seven sections: executive summary; purpose of the report; characteristics, skills and attributes of aspiring creatives; education-to-work transitions of aspiring creatives; participation of aspiring creatives in communities of practice; and conclusion.

Australian working life is being transformed. While many people have benefited, change is also creating challenges. These include skill shortages, declining birth rates, an aging workforce, wage inequality and work-life imbalances. Within this context, it is vital that reliable data about people's experiences at work feeds into policy development and debate. This document reports on a five year study of 8,343 participants in the Australian labour market which will assess the impacts of these changes and their perceptions of working life. It provides an overview of results from the first survey that gathered data on working conditions in March 2006 (before the implementation of the WorkChoices legislation) and 2007. The findings should be considered within an economic context of almost full employment, a booming economy and skill shortages.

The National Board of Employment, Education and Training (NBEET) was established under the Employment, Education and Training Act 1988 to provide the Minister with independent policy advice on matters relating to his portfolio responsibilities. It was augmented by a number of councils including the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Higher Education Council (HEC).

In 1996, the Government introduced legislation to abolish NBEET and its Councils, with the exception of the Australian Research Council and the Higher Education Council. NBEET and affected Councils progressively ceased to operate from this time. This legislation was still before the Parliament when it was dissolved for the 1998 Federal election. After being re-elected, the Government once again introduced legislation in March 1999 to abolish NBEET and its Councils, with the exception of the ARC. Pending its passage, all affected Councils and NBEET have ceased operation. At the close of the reporting period the legislation was still before the Parliament.

This report presents a comprehensive assessment by discipline of the quality of research activity conducted in Australia's higher education institutions. This report provides information on the discipline-specific research activity of each eligible Australian higher education institution (see Appendix 1: eligible institutions), and the contribution of each discipline to the national landscape. The report is divided into five sections which are listed below: (1) the introduction provides an overview of the [Excellence in Research for Australia] ERA framework and methodology; (2) section one, 'ERA 2012 national overview', provides a national summary of world standard research performance, a summary of all data submitted for the purposes of ERA evaluation, and some observations arising from ERA 2012 submission data; (3) section two, 'Results by Fields of Research (FoR) code, provides a summary of evaluation outcomes and data for each FoR code, including ERA rating outcomes, information about interdisciplinary research, and key volume and activity information; (4) section three, 'National profiles by FoR code', provides a detailed breakdown of ERA data by two-digit and four-digit FoR codes; and (5) section four, 'ERA 2012 institution report', provides the ERA ratings for each assessable Unit of Evaluation (UoE) for each of the 41 institutions eligible for ERA.

This report represents the second of two reports that aim to explore views about the employability of aspiring creatives. The first report, released in June 2009, presented findings from a survey of 507 aspiring creatives, defined as recent graduates and/or people with less than two years industry experience. The survey gathered data on the characteristics of aspiring creatives, skills and attributes, barriers to employment, workforce mobility, career intentions, professional development activities, mentoring and industry supports, and participation in communities of practice/networks. This current report presents findings from a project that developed the 60Sox Employer Survey and then administered this survey to 50 employers in Australia's creative digital industries. The survey included questions on employer characteristics, recruitment and training practices, employers' views of the capabilities of aspiring creatives, and participation in communities of interest/networks, mentoring and internships. The main purpose of the project was to identify capability gaps of aspiring creatives as well as those factors that enhance or inhibit employers' views of the capabilities of aspiring creatives - both of which impact on the ability of aspiring creatives to find work in their preferred occupations in Australia's creative digital industries. To achieve this purpose, the project team set itself three objectives: (1) to describe the characteristics and practices of employers; (2) to explore the views of employers and the views of aspiring creatives in relation to the capabilities of aspiring creatives; and (3) to identify the factors that influence employers' views of the capabilities of aspiring creatives. The report consists of six sections: an executive summary; data collection and analysis; a section for each objective; and a conclusion.
