Under the blanket term ‘youth transitions’ there are two main transitions: (1) the transition from education and training to work; and (2) the transition from secondary education to further education and training. Youth may undergo one or both of these transitions and they may undergo the transition to work more than once if they change careers. Both types of transitions may be interrupted by a ‘gap year’ or the transitions from secondary to further education and training may be interrupted by transition to employment in order to finance study. Research in this area looks at how to create a dynamic and sustainable future workforce and ways to keep youth connected with education, training and work options through the combined support of schools, business and families.
Key research from a broad date range
National research priorities 2017 onwards:
Although there are no projects specifically addressing ‘youth transitions’ within the national research priorities, issues associated with this process for young people are embedded in the overarching themes:
(1) structures and systems for skilling and learning;
(2) the impact of vocational education and training; and
(3) teaching and learning.
