The Minister for Indigenous Australians has delivered the 2023 Commonwealth Closing the Gap Implementation Plan. This Implementation Plan is the first under the Albanese Government, and outlines the Commonwealth's strategic priorities and efforts to close the gap over the next 12 to 18 months. In response to the Commonwealth Closing the Gap Annual Report 2022 [available in VOCEDplus at TD/TNC 150.721], the Implementation Plan paves a practical pathway with tangible actions to improve the lives of First Nations Australians.
The Implementation Plan contains new priority actions across each of the Priority Reforms, socio economic outcomes and cross cutting outcome areas (disability, gender and sexuality, ageing populations and remote Australia). The Implementation Plan is complemented by an interactive Commonwealth Closing the Gap Actions Table, which outlines all new and existing measures being undertaken by the Commonwealth to support Closing the Gap efforts.
Outcome 5, 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students achieve their full learning potential', aims to increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people (age 20-24) attaining year 12 or equivalent qualification to 96 per cent by 2031; Outcome 6, 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students reach their full potential through further education pathways', is to increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 25-34 years who have completed a tertiary qualification (Certificate III and above) to 70 per cent by 2031; and Outcome 7, 'Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth are engaged in employment or education', increase the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth (15-24 years) who are in employment, education or training to 67 per cent by 2031.
