Review of vocational education and training in ACT public schools: future directions

In 2015 the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Education and Training Directorate (ETD) commissioned a review of vocational education and training (VET) in ACT public schools. The review follows work that all jurisdictions undertook on the National VET Framework, Preparing Secondary Students for Work, and builds on achievements the ACT has already made under the National Partnership Agreement on Skills Reform and the Skilled Capital initiative. The review was conducted by Victoria University's Centre for International Research on Education Systems (CIRES) and included the delivery of this evidence based report on the provision of VET in ACT public schools. The review involved: examining and evaluating the current model or models of VET implemented in ACT public schools, including resourcing and governance; examining and evaluating VET practices within other Australian schooling sectors and jurisdictions; and drawing on Australian and international research perspectives. The results were used to produce a report that: identifies best practice educational and resource-effective approaches; and proposes future directions for consideration by ETD to strengthen VET provision.

The Directorate's response to the report, also developed by CIRES, agrees to seven future directions for provision of VET to secondary students in ACT public schools to ensure optimal outcomes for all students. The aim is to support the ACT Government commitment to ensuring all ACT public school students have access to high quality training programs and qualifications that are integrated into senior secondary education, valued by employers and recognised by further education providers.
