What's working?: navigating the AI revolution and the shifting future of work

This research investigates the changing world of work from the workers' perspective with a focus on the impact on work of Artificial Intelligence (Al) and Generative Al (GenAI). The Adecco Group surveyed 30,000 workers across 23 countries, with respondents nationally representative across age and gender, employed in a wide range of job functions across several sectors and company sizes. Key findings are that: (1) we are in a GenAI 'honeymoon phase' where beyond workers' initial positivity, organisations need a bigger plan for GenAI; (2) access to GenAI is not equal; its use is widespread but adoption is unequal and workers need clear guidance; and (3) uniquely human skills must be nurtured as technology replaces many technical skills, and soft skills will become increasingly important.

The report recommends four ways for organisations to prepare for the future or work: (1) embrace technology and transformation - workers need the tools, guidance and education to thrive during profound technological transition; (2) enhance skills and capabilities - we are moving to an economy based on skills rather than jobs and workers need support to build up their human and technical skills; (3) boost workers' mobility - in an increasingly dynamic environment, the workforce must be ready to shift roles and even industries, and this mobility is powered by transferable skills; and (4) protect workers' wellbeing - without a healthy workforce, there can be no future-ready workforce, therefore this has to be a priority.
