Australian vocational education and training statistics: total VET students and courses 2022

This publication provides an estimate of the extent and nature of nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) delivered in 2022 by Australian registered training providers (RTOs). This picture of training activity is known as 'total VET activity', to reflect that the information reports on students who undertook government funded training and those who undertook training on a fee-for-service basis.

In 2022, 4.5 million students were enrolled in nationally recognised VET, up 5.1 per cent from 2021. They included 2.1 million students enrolled in nationally recognised programs and 3.0 million students enrolled in subjects not delivered as part of a nationally recognised program. In 2022, compared with 2021: student numbers increased by 5.1 per cent; full-year training equivalents (FYTEs) increased by 0.3 per cent to 1.1 million; students enrolled in nationally recognised programs decreased by 1.3 per cent; and students enrolled in subjects not delivered as part of a nationally recognised program increased by 10.4 per cent. An estimated 25.0 per cent of the Australian resident population aged 15 to 64 years participated in nationally recognised VET. Over the five-year period from 2018 to 2022, student numbers increased by 11.3 per cent.
