Who wants to know about adult literacy?: report into the findings of the ACAL survey 2021-2022

From September 2021 to July 2022 the Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) ran a general survey to collect information about the public interest in adult literacy in Australia. The survey was titled 'Tell us about your interest in adult literacy'. It consisted of eight multiple choice questions and optional comments. 335 people completed the survey. The following conclusions drawn from the survey are outlined in this report: (1) over two thirds of people know someone with unmet literacy needs; (2) television is a good way to raise awareness; (3) people from a range of backgrounds are interested in adult literacy; (4) a combination of statistics and case studies about real people are useful for conveying a message; (5) the Reading Writing Hotline is an important central body for adult literacy; (6) advocacy work of the council stimulates interest in adult literacy issues; (7) people want to volunteer as tutors for adult literacy learners; and (8) there is an interest in professional qualifications for adult literacy teachers but there is no clear career pathway.
