The annual report provides information about the department's achievements, corporate arrangements and performance during the financial year (1 July to 30 June), and is tabled in the Parliament of Australia in October. The annual report provides information about the department's achievements, corporate arrangements and performance during the financial year (1 July to 30 June), and is tabled in the Parliament of Australia in October. The appendices include the annual reports of: the Trade Support Loans program; Tuition Protection Service; Student Identifiers Registrar; and, from 2020-21, the National Skills Commissioner.

Under the Administrative Arrangements Order (AAO) made on 5 December 2019, the employment and skills functions from the former Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business were transferred to the Department of Education. The Department of Education was renamed the Department of Education, Skills and Employment. Work towards implementing the Machinery of Government changes commenced on 5 December 2019, with changes taking effect from 1 February 2020.

In accordance with the Administrative Arrangements Order of 18 March 2021, the Prime Minister, the Hon Scott Morrison MP, announced changes to the structure of the Australian Public Service. Under the order, the coordination of youth affairs was transferred to the department. The 2020-21 report also provides information for the first time about the performance of the National Skills Commissioner's functions and the exercise of the Commissioner's powers.

Under the Administrative Arrangements Order (AAO) made on 1 June 2022, the employment and skills functions transferred to a new entity, the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations on 1 July 2022, and the Department of Education, Skills and Employment became the Department of Education.
