Learning and skills at work 2020: mind the gap: time for learning in the UK

This survey report and case studies, produced by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in partnership with Accenture, examine current practices and trends in learning and development (L&D) in UK organisations. [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 has accelerated the need for learning in organisations. The research reveals that, while progress has been made, a number of areas need to be addressed if organisations are to view learning as a strategic enabler driving productivity and performance, unlocking potential, and meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving work and employment context. In light of the survey findings, and acknowledging the impact COVID-19 on working and learning, the report makes the following recommendations for organisations: (1) align the learning and development strategy with organisational need; (2) increase the knowledge and capability of the organisation's learning function; (3) demonstrate value through evaluating learning impact; (4) consider the wider learning environment in the organisation; (5) embrace technologies that support learning and collaboration; (6) address transferable and technical skill gaps; (7) future-proof the organisation by understanding the types of skills needed and how they will be sourced; (8) ensure people managers have the knowledge, skills, behaviours and resources to support learning; and (9) do not press pause on learning and development; continue to invest in the skills of the organisation's workforce. A collection of accompanying case studies provide insight into the steps some organisations are taking to transform their learning practices.
