Building a better bridge: helping young adults enter and succeed in college

This report describes the New York City Partnership for College Access and Success (NYCPCAS), which aims to increase opportunities for college access and success for youth between the ages of 16 and 24 who are over-age, under-credited, or have dropped out and returned for a [General Education Development] GED or diploma. Specifically, the program seeks to increase access and retention for formerly disconnected youth; develop and implement effective ways to support these youth in their educational path; create a network of support between community organizations, schools, and colleges; and identify and address policy gaps in this field. In this report, the author describes lessons learned from the first year of a pilot program between Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) and the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) of the City University of New York (CUNY). Overall, the report found that the partnership resulted in higher retention rates than other similar CUNY students not participating in the program.
