Opportunity for all in a world of change: a White Paper on enterprise, skills and innovation

This White Paper on enterprise, skills and innovation from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) addresses the requirements for economic success in the United Kingdom (UK) over the next decade. It examines how Government will work with businesses and individuals to adapt to change and ensure investment occurs in a modern infrastructure. The key needs are to increase the educational and skill levels of the population, rationalise the system of vocational qualifications and develop information and communication skills. Investment in new technologies is required and there will be funding to promote the commercial exploitation of research. The document outlines how the Government has established economic stability and proposes initiatives and actions in five key areas: developing a more highly skilled workforce; building strong regions and communities; spreading the benefits of new research and technologies and developing new world-beating industries; ensuring markets operate effectively and fairly; and, strengthening the UK's position in European and global trade.
