Abstract:

This chapter is part of the work undertaken during the two-year international urban literacies project that investigated the many uses of literacy in the urban environments of developing countries. The author examines workplace literacy activities in Botswana in order to highlight the achievements so far and challenges still to be addressed. A brief analysis of the socioeconomic situation of Botswana emphasises the unprecedented migration of illiterate people into urban areas over the past 20 years.
