In April 1988 an Aboriginal Education Policy Task Force was appointed by the then Minister for Employment, Education and Training, and the then Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, to advise on all aspects of Aboriginal education in Australia, assess the findings of recent research and policy reports, and prepare priorities for the funding of existing programs and new initiatives. The Task Force was to make recommendations as a matter of urgency on Aboriginal education policy for inclusion in the 1988-89 Budget, based on the existing body of information already assembled in a number of recent reports. This report developed by the Aboriginal Education Policy Task Force should form the basis of a new national approach to Aboriginal education. The fundamental objective of the new approach should be to achieve broad equity between Aboriginal people and other Australians in access, participation and outcomes in all forms of education by the turn of the century. The report outlines the current situation in Aboriginal education, a national Aboriginal education policy, including proposed objectives, and strategies for schooling and for tertiary education, the development and implementation of a policy, and a summary of recommendations.
