Outcomes of consultations on the new national vocational education and training (VET) arrangements

Following the release of the Directions Paper, 'Skilling Australia: new directions for vocational education and training' (indexed at TD/LMR 85.657), the Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) undertook a series of consultations with business, industry, providers and departments on the future arrangements for Australia's national training system. This paper provides a summary of the key points from the consultations. These are presented under the headings of: Guiding principles; National governance and accountability framework; National skills framework; and Other issues. The consultations indicated strong support for: a greater emphasis on quality, especially on the outcomes of training; improved public reporting of provider performance; three year planning and funding cycles to provide greater certainty and stability; streamlined business processes; and establishing a single ministerial company to manage training products, materials and licensing.
