Overeducation and educational-occupational mismatch: a distinguishing integration

This article accounts for a renovation by enriching the existent literature regarding two major nowadays phenomena and their labor implications, which might require a rethinking regarding new career-development approaches: the overeducation phenomenon (academic graduates whose educational level exceeds the educational level required in their jobs) and the horizontal-mismatch phenomenon (the individuals' fit between their educational and occupational fields). The article clarifies the difference between those two phenomena's career repercussions - on three major individuals' career outcomes: wage gaps, job mobility, and demand for further higher education. Two hundred and twenty-one participants took part to reveal that the more the individuals experience horizontal mismatch throughout their career, the less their earning level is, and the horizontally mismatched individuals have lower probability for pursuing further higher education compared to the horizontally matched individuals. These findings' implications suggest individuals to try and modify their career planning, based on the ongoing technological and structural changes in Western-developed countries labor market.

A program of educational reforms initiated by the United Kingdom (UK) government aimed to make post-16 education broader and more flexible, to encourage young people to study more subjects, and to provide simpler combinations of academic and vocational subjects. These reforms were intended to encourage more participation in post-16 education and improve student retention and academic achievement. Curriculum 2000 was introduced in September 2000 and provided a range of new and revised qualifications at advanced level. The qualifications have been developed primarily for 16-19 year olds to provide greater breadth and flexibility in the post-16 curriculum. The new qualifications complement other established national qualifications. This report documents the innovative work of schools, sixth form and general further education (FE) colleges and the challenges confronted during the implementation of the new curriculum.

A program of educational reforms initiated by the United Kingdom (UK) government aimed to make post-16 education broader and more flexible, to encourage young people to study more subjects, and to provide simpler combinations of academic and vocational subjects. These reforms were intended to encourage more participation in post-16 education and improve student retention and academic achievement. Curriculum 2000 was introduced in September 2000 and provided a range of new and revised qualifications at advanced level. The qualifications have been developed primarily for 16-19 year olds to provide greater breadth and flexibility in the post-16 curriculum. The new qualifications complement other established national qualifications. This report has been produced to support schools and colleges in the implementation of Curriculum 2000. It examines the likely challenges for institutions in preparing for a second year of advanced level programs along with a new round of year one programs (year one and year two refer to the first and second years of programs - years 12 and 13).

The qualifications have been developed primarily for 16-19 year olds to provide greater breadth and flexibility in the post-16 curriculum. Curriculum 2000+2 documents the experience of institutions and learners in the 18 months since the reforms were introduced. Using a series of case studies, schools, sixth form and further education (FE) colleges, the report describes the implementation issues faced during the first two years and how they were addressed. The report covers areas such as Key Skills, progression, raising achievement, the examination process and assessment. In addition, the report includes a summary of comments made by Curriculum 2000 students who participated in the Learning and Skills Development Agency (LSDA) focus groups and a discussion of how the reforms will influence the work of institutions in the future.
