This video presentation explains how the TAFE pre-apprenticeship system works, following the experiences of two year 10 students, a girl and a boy, as they find out. After speaking to a TAFE counsellor, who advises them on the trade options available to them, the students interview a few apprentices and employers to gauge their opinions of the value of pre-apprenticeship courses. The apprentices admitted they were better prepared for their chosen trade and could take the 12 months off their apprenticeship contract. The employers admitted they prefer to hire pre-apprentices because they are more likely to stay with an apprenticeship contract.The course includes: technical training; skill training, including work experience; trade related subjects; trade maths and communications and personal development. The 'family of trades' is illustrated showing how the Building Construction Industry skills courses interrelate.

This submission reports on the need for TAFE to establish a remote sensing data analysis facility. The proposed facility would be located at Wembley TAFE and would use Australian developed software. The submission analyses the resource deficiencies and training needs of [the] Western Australian industry. It describes the objectives of the proposed facility and suggests how it can address specific industry needs. It gives details of the proposed system and suggests a six stage programme for it’s utilisation. A tabulated summary of costs and contributions to the project is included.
