This paper looks at the role of human memory in the understanding of learning, particularly lifelong learning. It discusses the main features of human memory and how memory changes as a function of age. Included in the discussion is the Betula Study which examined the development of memory and health in adulthood and old age. Three age functions (episodic memory, semantic memory, and perceptual representation system) are presented to show that memory systems develop differently throughout life. The author concludes that significant age deficits can be seen in episodic memory tasks but there are no age deficits for tasks assessing other memory systems when proper consideration has been taken of background factors like education.
