The ‘An ageless workforce: opportunities for business’ symposium was held in Sydney on August 27, 2003. It was hosted by the National Seniors Association and the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). The symposium was intended to develop an awareness among the business community of the labour market impacts of demographic change and how current employment practices affect the workforce participation of workers as they age. In this paper, the author examines data relating to large-scale trends that include the demographic ageing of the population and the workforce, in the context of workplace practices and the broader industry environment. The paper concludes that retaining mature age workers will be vital to sustaining the supply of available workers in the future.
