Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to ascertain the status of recent Korean four-year college students' acquisition of vocational qualification certificates (hereinafter 'certificates' or 'qualifications'), the factors that influence certificate acquisition, and the resulting employment and wage effects. Design/methodology/approach: Regression analysis was conducted on the data from the Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey.

Findings: The results showed that females and medicine and education majors had higher rates of vocational qualifications, as did the students in provincial as compared to metropolitan areas and students with high grades. In terms of effects on labor market outcomes, vocational qualifications exert a moderate degree of positive influence on employment rate, wage at the time of initial employment, and current wage (i.e. there is a persistent wage effect). Originality/value: This study will provide policy implications to decrease youth unemployment in Korea and worldwide as well as to build employment services supporting the acquisition of vocational qualifications across various disciplines.

Many researchers have explored how people share and construct similar mental models in teams. They have claimed that successful team performance depends on a shared mental model of team members about task, team, equipment and situation. Most of the literature has illustrated simplified relationships between a team's mental model and their performance without a valid instrument addressing the confined and relevant constructs of a shared mental model. This paper describes the instrument development steps and the conceptual framework for factors associated with shared mental models. After development and refinement, the instrument was finalized for use to measure team-related knowledge. The final instrument consists of 42 items that are linked to the five emergent factors of shared mental models including general task and team knowledge, general task and communication skills, attitude toward teammates and task, team dynamics and interactions, and team resources and working environment.

This booklet was prepared within the framework of a regional thematic study conducted by UNESCO Bangkok in collaboration with the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training. It is part of a series designed to summarise what is known, based on research, about selected contemporary policy issues relating to the national education systems of countries in the Asia and Pacific region. The booklet reports on a study that aimed to: (1) examine existing information bases related to the school-to-work transition in nine case study countries; (2) identify key barriers to the development of these information bases; and (3) identify possible areas of intervention for UNESCO and other related organisations. The case studies provide country specific examples of the issues and challenges currently confronting governments in implementing these critical information systems. Furthermore, recommendations are made to inform the decision-making of government officials, practitioners and stakeholders and to reinforce the synergy between [technical and vocational education and training] TVET policy, research and practice.

The human capital theory assumes the relationship between high education and high wage. Many decisions related to training/education are based on this assumption. However very few factors affecting the relationship have been investigated. Thus, this study tries to find out factors affecting employment for those who completed training. Based on the literature review, the factors of age, gender, training hours, training cost, training contents, training satisfaction level, and counselling satisfaction level were selected and analyzed using logistic regression analysis. The results showed that age, gender, training hours, training cost and training contents, including training satisfactory level, and training counselling were found to be significant factors affecting employment after vocational training.

This study explores the patterns and characteristics of job mobility among Korean youth through sequential analysis. It verifies initial career formation patterns to identify important implications in developing policies for effective labor market performance, using 15 years of job history data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel of the Korea Labor Institute. It finds that, first, simple laborers and service workers had the highest job mobility. Namely, young individuals begin their careers in jobs with low initial entry barriers and seek to change jobs quickly. Second, a significance test on job mobility showed that the mutual movement rate between jobs in professional, semi-professional, clerical and technical, machine operations-related, and simple labor fields was extremely low, indicating the presence of job mobility barriers. Third, females choose stable and familiar jobs compared to men, tending to adjust to one job type instead of considering new ones.
