It is clear from the example of the [information technology] IT occupations that rising demand for skilled workers cannot be addressed solely with more higher education qualifications, but that differentiated competence profiles are necessary. Additional options are called for, which integrate elements of academic and vocational education and thereby facilitate reciprocal transitions between the different educational sectors. The article presents how the '[German Qualifications Framework] DQR Bridge 5' project is developing cross-cutting education measures at Level 5 of the DQR, for which credit transfer can be granted within the framework of a regulated continuous vocational education and training and a bachelor degree programme.

Although there is a general consensus that high-quality training is an indispensable prerequisite for successful entry into working life by young people and ensures that requirements for skilled workers in trade and industry are fulfilled, how can quality of training be secured and developed further? In Germany, this question has been addressed by ten pilot projects within the scope of the funding priority 'Quality Development and Assurance in in-company vocational education and training'. These projects developed and tested training innovations emerging from practice with the assistance of academic research support. The pilot projects offer a store of best practice examples that can also be of use for the European quality strategy [European Quality Assurance in Vocational Education and Training] EQAVET. This publication presents the results of the pilot projects.

This report contains a structured overview of central quality assurance mechanisms which underlie the company-based part of initial training in the dual system in Germany. It provides information about the most important regulations, procedures and stakeholders which secure and facilitate the further development of training quality at the company as a learning venue. Quality assurance at vocational schools is given a much lower degree of coverage since this falls within the area of responsibility of the federal states.
