In this paper, the author looks at the emergence of a knowledge-based economy and society which makes education and training more important than before. People need not only to update their skills but to gain new skills if they are to remain competitive in the labour market. Strategies and programs implemented in Europe and intended to improve education and training and make lifelong learning a reality are discussed. It is concluded that education is an investment in the future and should be supported at all levels: European, national, regional and local.
