The impact of [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 on work, the workforce, and the workplace will persist after the health crisis has subsided. This research examines how the trends accelerated by the pandemic may reshape work in the long term. We explore these changes through 2030 in eight countries with diverse economic and labor market models: China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Together, these eight countries account for almost half the global population and 62 per cent of GDP. The pandemic has, for the first time, elevated the importance of the physical dimension of work. In this research, we define ten work arenas that group occupations according to their proximity to coworkers and customers, the number of interpersonal interactions involved, and their on-site and indoor nature. We find that jobs in work arenas with higher levels of proximity are likely to see greater transformation after the pandemic, triggering knock-on effects in other work arenas as business models shift in response.

This report argues that advancing women's equality in the countries of Asia Pacific could add $4.5 trillion to their collective annual GDP by 2025, a 12 per cent increase over the business-as-usual trajectory. Pursuing the goal of gender parity can lift many more women out of poverty, unleash the economic potential of many others, and reinforce the region's economic growth. The report proposes five areas for change in Asia Pacific: (1) focus on higher female labour force participation in quality jobs as a priority to boost economic growth; (2) address the pressing regional and global issue of women's under-representation in business leadership positions; (3) capture the economic and social benefits of improving women's access to digital technology; (4) shift attitudes about women's role in society and work in order to underpin progress on all aspects of gender equality; and (5) collaborate on regional solutions such as financing and knowledge-sharing as catalysts for gender equality.

Gender inequality is not only a pressing moral and social issue but also a critical economic challenge. If women - who account for half the world's working-age population - do not achieve their full economic potential, the global economy will suffer. While all types of inequality have economic consequences, in [this report the authors] focus on the economic implications of lack of parity between men and women. A 'best in region' scenario in which all countries match the rate of improvement of the fastest-improving country in their region could add as much as $12 trillion, or 11 per cent, in annual 2025 [gross domestic product] GDP. In a 'full potential' scenario in which women play an identical role in labor markets to that of men, as much as $28 trillion, or 26 per cent, could be added to global annual GDP by 2025.

The age of automation, and on the near horizon, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, offer new job opportunities and avenues for economic advancement but women face new challenges overlaid on long-established ones. Between 40 million and 160 million women globally may need to transition between occupations by 2030, often into higher-skilled roles. This research argues that, to weather this disruption, women (and men) need to be skilled, mobile, and tech-savvy but women face pervasive barriers on each, and will need targeted support to move forward in the world of work. The research finds that if women make these transitions, they could be on the path to more productive, better-paid work. If they cannot, they could face a growing wage gap or be left further behind when progress toward gender parity in work is already slow.
This new research explores potential patterns in 'jobs lost' (jobs displaced by automation), 'jobs gained' (job creation driven by economic growth, investment, demographic changes, and technological innovation), and 'jobs changed' (jobs whose activities and skill requirements change from partial automation) for women by exploring several scenarios of how automation adoption and job creation trends could play out by 2030 for men and women given current gender patterns in the global workforce. These scenarios are not meant to predict the future; rather, they serve as a tool to understand a range of possible outcomes and identify interventions needed. The term jobs is used as shorthand for full-time-equivalent workers. The research examines six mature economies (Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and four emerging economies (China, India, Mexico, and South Africa), which together account for around half of the world's population and about 60 per cent of global GDP.

As the United States takes action to contain [Coronavirus Disease 2019] COVID-19 transmissions and 'flatten the curve', physical distancing measures are the first line of defense - and they have profoundly altered the rhythms of everyday life. Countless neighborhood businesses have been shuttered, trips to the grocery store have to be carefully planned, and many parents are working remotely from home with their kids in the background. As of March 30, three-quarters of Americans were living under state or local stay-at-home mandates or advisories - and the economic fallout has been swift and dramatic. Discretionary spending has taken a hit, consumer confidence has been shaken, and small businesses are struggling. While there is great uncertainty about the depth and duration of this downturn, recent McKinsey research outlined multiple scenarios that vary depending on the spread of the virus and the public-health response as well as the effectiveness of policy in mitigating economic damage.
We estimate the number of jobs that may be affected by stay-at-home and physical-distancing measures in a two-step process. First, we analyze all 804 occupations tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Using the US Department of Labor's O*NET data on the characteristics of each occupation, we assigned each one a vulnerability rating of low, medium, or high. We defined low-vulnerability jobs as those that are deemed essential (such as doctors), require no physical proximity to others (that is, can be done remotely), or are likely to guarantee pay even if workers are furloughed (such as K-12 public-school teachers). We assume these workers continue to earn their full income continue during shutdowns. Medium-vulnerability jobs (such as those in manufacturing) require workers to be in proximity to co-workers but not the public; we assume that shutdowns will affect 30 to 50 per cent of these jobs. Finally, high-vulnerability jobs are nonessential roles that involve exposure to the public; we assume that shutdowns affect 70 to 90 per cent of these jobs.

The US labor market is going through a rapid evolution in the way people work and the work people do. The nature of work has changed as many workers have stuck with remote or hybrid models and employers have sped up their adoption of automation technologies. More recently, the accelerated development of generative artificial intelligence (AI), with its advanced natural language capabilities, has extended the possibilities for automation to a much wider set of occupations. Multiple forces are set to fuel growth in certain occupations and erode jobs in others. They generally fall into three categories: automation, including generative AI; an injection of federal investment into infrastructure and the net-zero transition; and long-term structural trends such as aging, continuing investment in technology, and the growth of e-commerce and remote work. This report explores: Which jobs will be in demand? Which ones are shrinking? And which ones could be hardest to fill?
Key findings include: (1) By 2030, activities that account for up to 30 per cent of hours currently worked across the US economy could be automated - a trend accelerated by generative AI. However, we see generative AI enhancing the way [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] STEM, creative, and business and legal professionals work rather than eliminating a significant number of jobs outright. Automation's biggest effects are likely to hit other job categories. Office support, customer service, and food service employment could continue to decline; (2) An additional 12 million occupational transitions may be needed by 2030. As people leave shrinking occupations, the economy could reweight toward higher-wage jobs. Workers in lower-wage jobs are up to 14 times more likely to need to change occupations than those in highest-wage positions, and most will need additional skills to do so successfully. Women are 1.5 times more likely to need to move into new occupations than men; and (3) The US will need workforce development on a far larger scale as well as more expansive hiring approaches from employers. Employers will need to hire for skills and competencies rather than credentials, recruit from overlooked populations (such as rural workers and people with disabilities), and deliver training that keeps pace with their evolving needs.
